Exercising Over 50: How to Begin

When it comes to exercising past the ages of 50 or 60, many people look at gyms, yoga studios, and health clubs with trepidation. Often, this reaction is a result of fear; fear of looking out of place, not knowing what to do or how to do it; price can also be a major consideration.

Unfortunately, this seems to be the time when many people seeking to improve their physical conditioning say the heck with it and just take a nap or watch a movie and eat another cookie.

Years ago, the options for these same somewhat determined would-be-over 50 exercisers were to workout at home. They would buy magazines on: physical fitness, books on aerobics, calorie counting, muscle building, running or yoga; then came exercise videos.

Today, there are daily fitness programs on cable. These programs cover the gamut of yoga, chair exercises, aerobics, aerobics with weights, and Pilates. The problem is you have to be ready to workout when the TV program airs, which may or may not fit your schedule.

Deciding what type of exercise program is right for you is often a daunting task for the un-initiated as well. For those who are too over-weight and out-of-shape to begin with, running is probably out of the question. Bicycling may be difficult as well.

One smart alternative to get started is to purchase a generic, aerobic chair or seated exercise video. This will allow the newbie to break-in slowly, stay motivated, and progress at their own speed.

Seated exercises are a great way to add aerobic conditioning to your daily routine, avoid damage to any joints, increase your metabolism to lose weight and accomplish the rest of your daily tasks with renewed energy.

Many of these videos will offer beginner, intermediate and advanced programs to allow for steady progress to greater fitness.

To get started:

· Check with your physician before beginning any exercise program.

· Start out slowly at a pace you can repeat several days a week.

· Steadily increase your participation from one or two days a week, to three and ultimately four. Resting in-between workout days.

· If something hurts, either don't do it or do it slower, or easier and allow your body to become accustomed to the new demands you're placing on it.

· Drink enough of water to replace what you lose sweating and to flush-out toxins. This is a wonderful way to detoxify the body, burn calories and gain strength and energy all at the same time.

· Eat a sensible diet, reducing calories and you will see quick results.

Re-evaluate your progress every 30 days so you don't settle into a comfortable routine; the body needs to be challenged to improve.

Once you can complete an exercise program with ease, celebrate your accomplishment and move up to the next level. This could include: standing or step aerobics, cycling, swimming, jogging, weight lifting, etc.

The most important things are: to start, be kind with yourself, if you find the exercises difficult to perform, don't be discouraged, be encouraged and proud that your have taken the first step at improving your life. Be persistent, consistent and brave.

Your Quick Guide To Real Ergonomic Chairs

The terms computer ergonomics and office ergonomics are often used to mean exactly the same thing; they're usually referring to body-adapted ergonomic chairs, office chairs, stools, desks, keyboards, mice, etc.

Sitting at workstations that are not designed with ergonomics in mind can contribute to chronic problems like carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive stress injuries. Incorrect ergonomics can cause back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, and many other medical problems. No matter what the task, an ergonomic chair will pay for itself fast due to experiencing less pain and increased productivity.

You may be looking for a new chair but if you're willing to buy a used chair you may be able to find a used true ergonomic chair, ergonomic office chair or a relatively expensive chair like the Aeron chair online or on eBay. It's not likely you'll find a cheap ergonomic chair or office chair.

The ergonomic executive office chair generally has an adjustable headrest or neck rest. If you're in a laboratory setting, you may need an ergonomic lab chair or stool on a tall cylinder with or without arms and when you're working on a taller stool you'll need to consider a foot rest to give you the right support for your feet, including your ankles and knees. The task chairs also have height-adjustable, pivoting arm rests and oversized and linear tracking arms.

Ergonomic intensive use chairs are very durable and especially need to be ergonomic in design, because workers are usually sitting for many hours. Intensive use chairs or seating, also known as 24/7 seating, is for dispatch room security monitoring areas, control rooms, and 911 emergency dispatch offices. There are stores online that can build an ergonomic lab chair or lab stool chair to your specification if you can't find one that fits your needs.

Some seat pans adjust easily for either a forward or backward tilt. The hydraulic seat height adjustment allows the user to adjust the chair so the feet can rest on the floor or footrest and the upper body is properly aligned with the computer monitor, keyboard and mouse. The chair-recline or tilt adjustment changes the angle of the entire seat.

Armrests alleviate the pressure on the back but may interfere with lower desks. Adequate lumbar support is the most crucial element of a backrest. As with backrest angle adjustability, a reclined chair transfers some of the upper body weight to the backrest.

The tilt mechanism maintains support as you move and recline; it's best to have your back in a slightly reclined position while seated at your desk. Adjustable height and width are absolutely necessary when buying a chair with armrests; the armrest should be made of a soft material and should be at least 2" wide to provide an adequate surface area. It's important to purchase a chair which uses dense, small-cell foam padding or spring coils to retain its support and cushioning, usually found in higher quality chairs.

You can sometimes find the more expensive Aeron chair used online or at office furniture consignment stores if you're looking for a used chair. Whenever you see the designation ergonomically designed, it may not be truly ergonomic and just a marketing ploy. These chairs may have a couple of features that are ergonomic. If you can't afford a new Aeron chair find another brand that is a true ergonomic chair.

Choosing the Correct Ergonomic Office Desk

Choosing the correct ergonomic office desk and ergonomic office chair will gain increased satisfaction from the office workers. The selection of a good ergonomic desk and chair will make it easier for the worker to perform their work tasks on an hourly and daily basis.

Ergonomic office desk furniture defined:

Ergonomic furniture will be office furniture that provides an effective fit that assumes high productivity that avoids repetitive injury that will lead to increased satisfaction by the worker seated at that desk.

If you sit in an office chair at a desk that is too high or too low, then you risk being seated all day in a slouched position or in a position that has you reaching to do your work. This then can lead to what is called musculo-skeletal disorders or injury to the skeleton due to prolonged awkward posture.

How can ergonomic furniture decrease this type of injury?

One thing you want to do when purchasing office furniture is make sure the worker will be comfortable when sitting at their desk working all day long. The proper office furniture will decrease poor body mechanics like that slouching in the chair. A spine is not meant to be put in that position every minute of a day.

A proper office desk will have a work surface at the correct height for the task being performed on it. Someone who works with blueprints all day long will most likely require a higher working surface. Someone working on computers all day will require a work surface that is elbow high.

The correct desk will have an adjustable work surface. This will include the proper height for the keyboard. The mouse and computer screen must be easily reachable. Of course the desk chair should properly fit the workers body and have good back support. This desk chair should also be adjustable for comfort. You have to provide a user friendly work area.

Ergonomic furniture is not cheap, although it can be purchased used. If you choose the correct ergonomic office desk you will have satisfied office workers.

Office Stools - The Different Types and Uses

A well designed office stool is one of the most critical elements of an ergonomic workstation, after all it will be the piece of furniture you use most throughout the day. Whether sitting in an office stool or office chair, prolonged sitting or standing in the same position throughout the day can cause discomfort and can even lead to unnecessary aches and pains. An ergonomically outfitted workstation coupled with an appropriate office stool to sit in and proper sitting posture can lead to increases in productivity and efficiency. With the vast amount of unique job professions and tasks out there, there are a myriad of office stool solutions designed to fit specific jobs. When deciding between all the different variations of office stools on the market, it is important to figure out what your individual office needs will be and how much time you will be spending sitting in your stool.

Saddle stools are among the most diverse stools out there, and break away from the traditional office stool mold with its distinct seat shape. A saddle stool features a different way of sitting with its seat shaped in the form of a saddle similar to one that you would see on a horse's back. This seating option works best for dentist or medical offices where the ability to sit in one sturdy position is helpful. For example, when a dentist is cleaning a patient's teeth and wants to stay in one place without having to slide around to get comfortable, a saddle stool would definitely be of use. With seat height adjustment and seat angle adjustment, saddle stools are also an ergonomic option as they have quite a few adjustments and aid the user in sitting with proper posture.

If you spend little time sitting down throughout the day and only require a stool for a few hours of usage, then a medical stool would be an adequate seating option. Medical stools are basic stools that come with a fabric, leather, or vinyl seat covering on top of a base with rolling casters. They are budget friendly, simple, easy to get around on, and a great choice if your job does not require much sitting. Medical stools are also compact allowing them to fit in just about anywhere without taking up too much space. As their name implies, these stools are mostly used in medical settings but are often found in schools, file rooms, home offices, and anywhere that an inexpensive seating choice is needed.

Many jobs require the need for seating that will permit the ease of transfer from a sitting position to a standing position in a quick fashion. A sit stand stool allows for quick adjustment from sitting down to standing up with its extended seat height, and occasionally seat angle adjustment. The seat angle adjustment allows for a more ergonomic way of sitting and lets the user adjust from sitting to standing briskly. Sit stand stools are best for use in environments where workers stand for most of the day at higher workstations such as labs, pharmacies, or in production lines where little time is spent sitting.

Some professions call for heavy-duty seating where a typical office chair or stool would not withstand, and damage resistant furniture is required. Industrial stools provide a high quality seating solution for factory, clean-room, laboratory, and other harsh environments where durability, damage resistance, and ergonomic seating support is needed. Most industrial seating stools come with a tough polyurethane material on the seat and back of the chair. Polyurethane withstands stains, spills, rips, and tears; ideal for even the toughest work environments.

Along with the aforementioned stools, there are many other office stools out there that serve a wide variety of purposes. When searching for an office stool, it is essential to know what kind of environment the stool will be used in as well as how ergonomic you need it to be. Also take into account how long you will be spending sitting on the stool everyday to determine ergonomic necessities and how adjustable you will need to the chair to be.

How Important Is Buying A Good Office Chair?

How many employees can say that they have worked for more than 8 hours a day in the office and went home still feeling rejuvenated and invigorated? I guess there aren't too many people who can say that. However, more and more companies now replace old and stiff office chairs with more ergonomic and more comfortable work chairs.

How exactly can a good office chair benefit the employees and the company?

Reduction of Body Aches and Pressure Sores

Pressure sores can easily develop after hours of sitting in front of your computer using an uncomfortable chair. The right chair can offer your body therapeutic benefits. It prevents other body concerns such as wrist problems, neck pain and muscle stiffness.

Better Back Posture

You can train your body to have better spinal posture through the use of the right work chair. The spine supports the upper part of your body when you sit. More often than not, we don't pay attention to the structure of our spine when we sit. This speeds up the development of curved spine. This can be a debilitating problem in the future.

Increased Productivity

Because you feel less muscle and body pains, you become more productive in the work place. This also improves your stamina at work. It is also easy to say that offices with ergonomic chairs have lesser percentage of employee absences.

Better Circulation

Poor blood circulation can actually make an employee less tolerant to pressure. Employees become less irritated and hot-tempered when a comfortable chair is used. A good chair should not cut the flow of circulation especially in the thighs.

Fewer Complaints

The benefits mentioned above all lead to reduction of complaints. Employees can now concentrate more on work tasks instead of the inconveniences of body pains.

Buying a good office chair is really important. The boss should not be the only one enjoying the comforts of a good chair. The employees also have to be given the same privilege since they are the ones who make things possible in the workplace.

When buying work chairs for your office, compare comfort and support features. There are also different materials today that enhance the comfort experienced by the user. Memory foam is one of those materials.

Make sure the whole body experiences relief from a whole day of working. There should be features that can support the shoulders, neck, lumbar region, thighs, arms and wrists. Compare prices in different stores and strike a deal with the seller.

Supply Buying the Easy Way

Anyone who works for a company of any size today knows that budgets are tight and every penny saved counts. However, saving money must be balanced against everyday needs such as office and hotel supplies. Most offices run on copy paper, coffee, cream and sugar, cleaning supplies and a wide variety of other common, necessary office supplies and would be literally dysfunctional without them. While offices know that there are basics required for any office to function properly, finding the time, money and best price when it comes to acquiring hotel supplies is often a different story entirely.

When it comes to saving time, money and energy, the internet might well be one of the best inventions ever created. Where shopping for office supplies is concerned, it's a God-send. Websites aim to make consumers' lives easier by providing quick, convenient, easy access to quality, well priced office supplies. Unlike many clothing websites, websites whose known customer is the office person purchasing the office and hotel supplies tend to be cleaner, crisper, easier to navigate and more to the point. For websites, the goal is simple: make the life of the person charged with purchasing the supplies as simple and painless as possible while helping them save money as well.

Perhaps the hardest part of shopping hotel supplies, comparison shopping is not always a simple task. In fact, it can be time consuming and difficult as some items must be touched or seen in person to test for ease of use or functionality prior to purchasing. Some people are pickier than others when it comes to the quality of hotel supplies such as cleaners, toilet paper and facial tissue, for example. For people who are more interested in convenience and who don't need to touch or test products prior to buying them, websites are useful and convenient. There are also a number of website specifically for comparison shopping.

Every office has a budget although some are more stringent than others. Within those budgets, offices also have necessities and luxuries. Necessities include pens, copy paper, toilet paper and other office and hotel supplies. While many people consider them necessities, coffee, cream and sugar, coffee cups, facial tissues and desk organizers, among other hotel supplies, are considered luxuries by many companies, especially now, when budgets are tight and revenues are down.

Office workers charged with researching, comparing and purchasing office supplies have a difficult job, to say the least. However, tools, including many easy-to-use websites, abound for their use. Many people go shopping for hotel supplies then come back to their offices and order them online to get better pricing. The bottom line is, when someone is charged with ordering office and hotel supplies, they're looking to save money and time while still getting quality products for their company.

Get Quality Comfort With an Ergonomic Task Chair

We often complain about staying long hours at work with nothing left to us but an aching back. This is a common scenario for everyone-we are often too engrossed in doing our work that we oftentimes forget that it is very important for us to be seated comfortably as possible. When we forget about this very important aspect, we develop further health complications notably back pains. If you are one of the million people who are in the same line of problem, then it is time to have an ergonomic task chair in your home office.

What is an ergonomic task chair? The goal of an ergonomic chair is providing you with the maximum comfort that you need once you purchase it. What manufacturers put into mind when coming up with this type of office necessity is that it should have the ability to coordinate the existing physical conditions felt by an individual who uses it coupled with the understanding of the health capacities of the user. There are some important aspects to consider when you plan to have an ergonomic chair to rest perfectly in your office space.

It is very important for a user to further evaluate the design of the ergonomic task chair which he wishes to avail. The chair should provide the user with an optimum comfort, making sure that he has a certain amount of space he could use to move in a little. Some ergonomic chairs available in the market do not make room for the user to move around freely. This is a big problem for most of us, since it's a sure way to cause serious back pains which would be deemed as a dreaded fact. Make sure that the ergonomic chair that you decide to purchase is made up of quality materials, with its cushion providing the maximum comfort for the user. The cushion should allow the weight of the user to be evenly distributed in the bulk of the chair. Disregarding this perhaps trivial matter will cause a great deal of back pain of the user when it is not remedied.

Another is consideration is that the user should test the ergonomic chair that he wishes to purchase. Choose one which employs an adjustable back feature coupled with a stretch seat. In this way, you would be sure that your back pains would further be alleviated once you take note of this aspect. If you want to have a full support for your mid-back, then a chair incorporating a lumbar support feature would be best for you. With this type of ergonomic task chair, you would be assured that it would provide you a better comfort than the standard office chair that we oftentimes have. This type allows the user to adjust it to whichever height you desire so as you could bid goodbye to the toughest back pains in the world caused by stress and strain brought about by the standard office chair.

Toronto City Summit Alliance - David Crombie Award

The Toronto City Summit Alliance is the recipient of the David Crombie Award from the Canadian Urban Institute's 2010 Urban Leadership Awards program, which has been paying tribute to individuals, groups and organizations that have made a profound and lasting impact on the quality of life in Canada's cities and urban regions. The Toronto City Summit Alliance (TCSA) is a diverse coalition of civic leaders whose mission is to accelerate social and economic development in the Toronto region. Since its origins following a summit held in 2002, more than 6000 volunteers have been actively involved in its projects and programs. Although many of the TCSA's initiatives are associated with the inspirational leadership of its founder, the late David Pecaut, the continued success and demonstrated impact of the TCSA in the region result from the savvy application of business principles to civic entrepreneurship as well as the commitment of all concerned. The TCSA's model of "collective leadership" has forged working partnerships across the region within a number of inter-related social, economic, environmental and cultural sectors. The Chair of the TCSA is John Tory, who succeeded David Pecaut. The TCSA's day-to-day operations are led by CEO Julia Deans and a small complement of professional and administrative staff. What sets the TCSA apart from other civic initiatives is its focus on action, symbolized by the publication in 2003 of "Enough Talk," which provided an enduring blueprint ...

Easy Guide To The Best Ergonomic Chair Tips

If you're willing to purchase a used ergonomic chair you might be able to find a used office chair or an expensive chair like the Aeron chair online or on eBay. If you spend just about all of your waking hours at your desk, you know you require a chair that works with your body to spare you from needless backaches and fatigue. The word ergonomics is often used when speaking about working at the computer in a way that promotes beneficial posture and body form.

Incorrect ergonomics can cause back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, and additional medical issues. When shopping for or purchasing an ergonomic chair online, finding the bestchair depends a great deal on what sort of work you do whether at home or outside of home. More attention should be given to ergonomics when shopping for or purchasing anything that we are going to be using every day.

Ergonomic task chairs and seating generally have a lower back design for better movement in a computer workstation; these task chairs are obtainable with or without arms. Ergonomic intensive-use chairs or seating, a.k.a. 24/7 seating, is for dispatch room security monitoring areas, control rooms, and 911 emergency dispatch offices. Tilt choices on the industrial chair mechanisms in addition to cylinder height must be weighed depending on the task to be managed.

There are a lot of extra-large chairs that are outstanding for security guards as the size of this chair provides for equipment to be worn on the belt and not to become fastened on the arms of the chair. Managers' chairs often have a knee tilt mechanism, which is ideal for multitasking; it makes it easy to go from computer work to telephone conferences with extraordinary ease. Intensive-use chairs are very long-wearing and particularly need to be ergonomic in purpose, since workers are generally sitting for many hours.

The tilt mechanism sustains support when you move and recline; it's better to have your back somewhat reclined while seated at your desk. The foremost section of the seat should slope downward somewhat and permit a fist-size opening between the back of the knees and the front edge of the seat pan to keep down pressure at the back of the thighs. The chair reclines or tilt adjustment modifies the angle of the whole seat as it is relative to the floor.

Remember, a lumbar support cushion properly positioned behind the small of the back may greatly help to accentuate lumbar support. The hydraulic seat height adjustment permits the user to adjust the chair so their feet can rest upon the floor or footrest and the upper body is properly lined up with the computer monitor and with the keyboard and mouse. Rubber locking casters are of value on stools to prevent tipping.

It is also essential that the user shift body position throughout the day. A lot of chairs come with a built-in lumbar adjustment which may be adjusted by turning a knob on the side of the chair. Just about every ergonomic task chair comes with a hydraulic seat height adjustment, which is in all probability the single most important adjustment mechanism on a chair.

The best ergonomic chairs, such as the Herman Miller Aeron Chair, begin at approximately $400 or so. Chair prices do vary greatly and first-class materials and construction will cost more. Some online stores will allow you to rent chairs and additional high-ticket equipment; you can test a chair for a month prior to determining if you want to purchase it and if you choose to keep the chair, the stores will apply the rental price towards the total cost.

Romantic Tips - Gift Giving

I believe that we have all heard of the standard romantic gifts. Chocolate, flowers, and jewelry, but there is something to be said for the man who thinks out side the box when gift giving holidays roll around.

I had the absolute best birthday this past year. You see, my husband has a difficult time picking out gifts for me and he has been known to give me things like a vacuum cleaner for Christmas. However, he really did a great job this year. You see, my children and my husband kept asking me what I wanted. I told them all that I've been saying things that I want for the last year and if they can't remember at least one of them then there was something wrong. Ok, I didn't say that to my children but, I did say it to my husband.

Off to the store they went. They came back with a potted indoor tree, a potted flower, and an office chair. To some women that may not seem too romantic. But to me it was just perfect. My oldest daughter picked out the tree. She remembered that I had just said a few weeks before that we needed more green inside our home and that I wanted to get a tree when we had the money. My youngest daughter picked out the potted flower. She is always bringing me hand picked "flowers" only to be dismayed a couple of days later when they are dead. I have explained to her why this happens. The fact that she remembered this explanation and decided that I should always have a beautiful flower to look at spoke volumes.

Now, my husband and the office chair. I'm sure many of you are trying to figure out how in the world I could consider that a romantic gift. It was actually quite a surprise. I was expecting something like the new release of the Charmed DVD, after all, that is what I had been desperately wanting (I even asked for it for our anniversary). I don't recall saying that I wanted an office chair. However; I do recall complaining quite frequently about the little task chair that I had. I sit at my computer all day long and that little task chair was quite uncomfortable and left me with many aches and pains. My darling husband remembered my complaints and decided to solve my problem. Now that is romantic!

When it comes to gift giving it's almost always better to think outside the box. Try to get your partner something that they have been wanting. Try to refrain from giving appliances for the gift giving holidays, even if it's something your partner has said they would like to have.

Mesh Ergonomic Office Chair - In Stock - Free Shipping!

modernoffice.stores.yahoo.net 1-800-443-5117 - Our mesh ergonomic office chair combines ergonomic controls with comfort and aesthetics. It's an excellent choice at an extreme value price for your office or home office whether you are looking for an all-day workhorse office chair or a designer-look chair. Its slim, ecofriendly design incorporates a breathable Wine mesh fabric (also available in Black) over a formed polyurethane framework for contoured performance without the use of the standard foam over plywood. The seat makes use of two types of foam for comfort and durability - high density foam at the seat base provides long lasting form while a low density mesh foam fabric gives a softer landing to your initial sit. The function you will most appreciate on this office chair is its synchro tilt control. This allows you to tilt the back of the chair at a ratio to the seat angle of the chair. As you recline the front of the seat pan will not rise under your thighs causing restrictive pressure. The synchro control can be left in a free float or locked in your preferred position for the task at hand. How The Right Work Chair Can Prevent Chronic Tension Headaches

If you suffer from chronic tension headaches, back pain or neck pain, you're probably aware that poor posture was at least partly responsible.

However, did you know the way you sit may have had more to do with your pain than the way you stand?

If you're like most Americans, you spend much of your day seated. That's because your work station is probably at a computer terminal, assembly line, or desk.

Consider, too, that much of your time at home is also spent sitting - either watching T.V., surfing the Internet or reading. As a result, of the 16 hours or so you're awake, you may well spend 12 or more of them sitting down.

Doesn't it make sense then, that you should concentrate as much on your sitting posture as you do your standing posture?

And while standing properly - shoulders rolled back, head up, chest out - is important, the benefits of a good standing posture will be minimal if you slouch all day at your desk.

You may be one of many unfortunate workers who are forced to slouch because your work chair won't adjust to accommodate your body, or because you don't have your chair adjusted properly.

THE DANGERS OF IMPROPER SITTING

Three things can happen when you habitually slouch for long periods every day. They're all bad:

* stiffness and pain in your muscles, connective tissue and joints

* restricted breathing

* postural deformities

STIFFNESS AND PAIN

Problems related to inappropriate seating are cumulative. The first noticeable symptom is usually stiffness and pain in your low back, upper back or neck. These can lead to chronic tension headaches, back aches, and muscle spasms or a restriction of circulation in your legs.

As a result of sitting slouched over all the time, other body segments begin to break down because when one part of the body is out of alignment, it'll have an effect on the structures above and below it.

For example, if you habitually sit slumped over you're not only at risk for back and neck pain, but also for repetitive strain injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome.

RESTRICTED BREATHING

When you're sitting upright, you should have good tone in your lower abdominal muscles so your diaphragm is in its proper, raised position. This is important for optimal breathing.

But when you slump in your seat, your lower abdominal muscles relax and your diaphragm lowers. This forces you to breath from the upper chest instead of from the diaphragm.

As a result of decreased support from a relaxed lower abdominal wall, together with a lowering of your diaphragm, your abdominal organs are forced downward, which restricts your breathing.

POSTURAL DEFORMITIES

If you're a woman, the resulting pressure in your pelvis from slouching all day for prolonged periods of time can be an overlooked cause of back, pelvic and menstrual pain.

And - particularly if you're a woman - you risk skeletal deformities if your poor seating posture is not corrected.

Often, when people think of a "round-back" posture, they usually associate it with a post-menapausal woman who's already had osteoporosis.

However, many pre-menopausal women have rounded backs that are caused by the way they sit all day.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF YOU'RE SEATED PROPERLY

Here's a checklist you can use that will help you determine if you're sitting properly:

* your feet are firmly on the floor, or on a foot rest, slightly in front of you

* your seat is adjusted so that your thighs are parallel to the floor, with your knees at about 90 degrees and slightly lower than your hips

* your seat allows your weight to be borne primarily on the upper half of your thighs

* your knees are shoulder width apart or closer

* your chair seat isn't too deep (you shouldn't be sinking in your chair)

* you're able to sit upright, maintaining the natural curves of your back

* your back is adequately supported

* your pelvis is neutral

* your rib cage is elevated

* you can draw a straight line down through your ear, shoulder, rib cage and pelvis (check this by sitting in front of a full-length mirror, or have a co-worker analyze your sitting posture)

ERGONOMIC TIPS FOR COMPUTER USERS

If you sit at a computer terminal all day, there are other factors you need to consider:

* you should be sitting directly in front of your keyboard and computer screen

* your monitor should be between 18 - 24 inches from your eyes, and you should have to look slightly down to see it

* you should use a work surface that allows your elbows to maintain about a 90 degree angle

* you should keep your shoulders relaxed; don't slump forward

* you should relax your wrists and keep them in a neutral position; don't flex them up or down

* while typing, keep your shoulders relaxed and your elbows loose at your side

* take breaks

When doing extensive computer work, it's important to take brief breaks to stretch and walk around every 30 minutes or so. Alternate between work activities that utilize different muscle groups.

Make sure to give your eyes a periodic break, too. For example, blink frequently, close them momentarily and gaze at different objects.

THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF CHAIRS

CASTER WHEELS

In most work environments, and in nearly all offices, chairs are mounted on caster wheels to allow you to move from task to task easily. These wheels are usually mounted on a five-point base.

STATIONARY BASE

In some industrial settings, a chair with a stationary base is more common because of safety issues. Such chairs are often found in laboratories because the floors tend to be hard and smooth, making caster wheel chairs risky.

Stationary chairs are the norm in assembly lines because they're more stable.

BENCH CHAIR

Bench chairs are often used in small parts assembly areas in manufacturing, as well as for other jobs that require manual dexterity. Bench chairs are higher than typical office chairs and usually offer footrests for stability and comfort.

SIT-TO-STAND CHAIRS

Sit-to-stand chairs are best if you move from a seated to a standing position often during your shift (if you work as a receptionist or assembly line worker, a sit-to-stand chair would be a good choice).

These chairs usually don't have a backrest. the seat is angled downward, allowing you to lean comfortably in a half-standing position.

OTHER FACTORS THAT AFFECT ERGONOMICS

BACKRESTS

The backrest of your chair should stabilize your pelvis and elevate your rib cage by supporting your lower back.

If it doesn't support your lower back properly, then it will sink into the backrest. A backrest that's too soft, inclined, and/or concave causes this to happen.

These faults result in a backrest that supports the wrong areas, which reinforces slumping.

FOOTRESTS

If your work surface is too high to allow you to place your feet on the floor, then you need a footrest. The footrest should be large enough to allow you some movement during the day. It should also be adjustable to accommodate your height and leg length.

FIVE-POINT BASE

A five-point base offers you maximum stability and can usually be found with any type of chair.

HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT WORK CHAIR FOR YOUR BODY TYPE

When shopping for a work chair, you must realize that one size doesn't fit everyone. You must consider what you do at your chair all day, as well as take into account your physical size.

Generally speaking, you want a chair that provides appropriate support to your back, legs, buttocks and arms.

Here are the various components of a work chair and what to look for in them:

THE BASE

You want a chair that has a five-pedistal (point) base, regardless of whether you need casters (wheels). If you choose a chair with less than five pedestals, you're sacrificing stability and safety (chairs with four casters can tip over more easily).

Make sure the base allows the chair to swivel easily.

ARMRESTS

Keep in mind that armrests should only be used while reading or resting between typing sessions, NOT while actually typing or using your mouse. Depending on how you spend your time in the chair, you might not even need armrests.

If you do get a chair with armrests, make sure they're adjustable, broad, cushioned and comfortable. While seated, you should be able to independently adjust the height of the armrests and move them closer together or further apart.

THE SEAT PAN

The part of the chair that you sit in (the seat pan) should allow even weight distribution and comfortable support. Pay attention to the width and depth of the seat pan - it should be wide enough to give you at least one inch of unused space on both sides of your thighs and hips.

It should also be deep enough to support your thighs comfortably and not put pressure behind your knees (that's bad for circulation).

The seat pan should feel comfortable even after sitting for an hour or more. Insufficient cushioning and poor contouring can cause hip and back fatigue, so ensure that the padding is of high enough quality to resist becoming permanently deformed.

CHAIR HEIGHT

You should buy a chair that allows you to adjust its height easily. The best chairs have a device that permits you to adjust the height of the seat pan while you're seated (a chair with a spinning mechanical height adjustment mechanism is okay, too).

Either way, make sure the adjusters are within easy reach while you're seated - you shouldn't have to get up to change the height of your chair.

If more than one person will be using the chair, make sure the range of heights will accommodate all users. You should be able to adjust the height of the seat pan so that the fronts of your knees are level, or slightly below level, with your feet firmly on the ground or on a footrest.

LUMBAR SUPPORT

A good lumbar support (the part of the chair that supports your lower back) is essential. Many chairs have cushioned lumbar supports that can be adjusted up and down and forward or backward. That's what you want, as these supports will better fit your shape.

The ability to adjust your chair is especially important if more than one person will use the chair.

A fixed-height lumbar support might be okay if you're the only user of the chair and it feels comfortable when you sit back against it.

When sitting against the lumbar support, make sure there's sufficient room for your hips and that you aren't being forced so far forward in the chair that you lose thigh support.

BACK SUPPORT

The back support should recline to allow you to sit back at more than 90 degrees. The best chairs allow your back to move and also track your back as you move back and forth.

Try to avoid locking a back support in one position. Look for a support that's sufficiently broad and doesn't put pressure on the side of your back. The support should also be tall enough to provide good support to the middle of your back - at least up to your shoulder blades.

HEADREST

If you like to recline in your chair to read, talk on the phone or relax, look for a chair with a high back and good neck and head rest.

PRICE

Good chairs are coming down in price, but they can still be costly. You can get a good chair for between $300 and $500.

(Remember this - you get what you pay for)

While $300 to $500 (or more) may seem like a lot of money for a chair, if you're among the millions of people who spend most of their workdays sitting, a high-quality, comfortable chair is a wise investment.

Improve Work Conditions With An Ergonomic Task Chair

If you need employees to perform and work better, you need an ergonomic task chair at every desk in the office. If the employee has a comfort-sitting chair, they have less discomfort and can perform work more efficiently without worrying about backaches, headaches and neck and shoulder pain. The chairs are adjustable and this way, if you hire new employees to work at the same desk, the ergonomic task chair will meet their needs as well with a few adjustments.

Studies have shown that people, who sit in chairs all day for work, get less done if they are uncomfortable. With an ergonomic task chair employees would accomplish more work because they will have some comfort. It is necessary to keep employees health good in order to keep medical bills down to a minimal.

What Is The Right Ergonomic Task Chair

You will have many designs and styles to choose from when looking for the best ergonomic office chair. You can shop for any type of chair that will fit any employee you have. The ergonomic task chair has height adjustments and armrest adjustments, which allows more than one person to use the chairs.

You need to buy a chair that will fit everyone; therefore, you need to look for a chair that does not have a definite contour to the back of the chair. This way it will conform to anyone who uses it. Because everyone is different, you need to buy the ergonomic task chair that has a wide enough seat area to allow for easy movement. It is a good idea to buy all the same style and designed chairs that will fit everyone's needs. Since the lumbar support is adjustable, everyone can adjust this to support his or her lower back comfortably.

You will spend some money to buy the ergonomic task chair, but in the long, you will see more work being done and thus the chair pays for itself. The employee will always feel more relaxed and free from any aches and pains from sitting in a regular office chair that does not offer all the comfort the ergonomic task chair offers the employee. Armed with this information, employers can now buy the right chairs for the employees and see work performance double because the employees are relaxed and comfortable while working.

The Benefits Of Ergonomic Chairs

Like so many Americans, you probably work in an office, spending up to 80 hours a week, cranking out the numbers, diligently working and, contrary to what your boss thinks, not merely downloading Youtube videos. Well, okay, there was that one isolated incident, but come on, everybody had to see that beatbox flute guy clip, right? And like so many Americans, you probably spend these full time hours seated, oblivious to the fact that this seemingly benign activity, according to ergonomics-informationsite "exerts great stress on the back because it transfers the full weight of the upper body onto the buttocks and thighs." Of course, you probably realize that something is up when your mid-back aches or feels numb, when your knees throb, when that midmorning headache has some extra bite. Typical chair design, most chairs in most work places, provide inadequate support for the seated body, which can lead to back pain, fatigue, and as a result, can decrease work performance.

But there is a science to the rescue: ergonomics. Not merely the concept of bending at your knees versus your back when lifting heavy objects, ergonomics is the science of "equipment design... intended to maximize productivity by reducing operator fatigue and discomfort" (the American Heritage Dictionary, Fourth Edition). I guess it is comforting to know that somewhere in Sweden, there is a team of scientists thinking about sculpting and molding chairs that support the proper S-curve of the spine, as well as proper blood flow to the low back and buttocks. However, it is well documented that something as simple as proper ergonomic design reduces fatigue and minimizes the stress on the body. Workers with better posture, with chairs that support such posture will be able to do more, to be more productive, or to fly through Amazon.com in search of "Star Trek: the next generation" DVDs with extra verve.

What it boils down to is the concept of shaping the work environment, in this case the chair, to the needs of the worker and not the other way around. A brief perusal of ergonomic chairs may be a strange experience. They often look like lofty and uncomfortable apparatuses. For instance, the Australian Kneelsit ergonomic chair looks like a piece of exercise equipment: not only is its seat angled forward and down, but it features an additional pad to support the knees. But they seem to work well, according to their kneelsit website, their funky looking chairs were shortlisted for the 1997 Australian Industrial Design Award. More to the point, the chair, and others like it, coerces the body into an open posture that supports the lumbar vertebrae. You can say goodbye to those aches and pains, and look forward to comfortable work days and a retirement without the need for a cane.

Of course, proper ergonomics, and the benefits associated with it go beyond chair design. It is advised that the office worker take occasional stretch breaks, stay hydrated, and rest the wrists. As I sit here, on a decidedly non-ergonomic stool at a coffee shop, I can actually feel some soreness in the shoulders, as well as a dull ache in my low back. As October is national ergonomics month, it is high time that I personally looked into a proper ergonomic chair [http://www.millbrookindustries.com/office-task-chairs]. It would make one more efficient worker, and a host of happier Swedish ergonomic engineers.

Wood Office Chairs - Repair Tips!

Woods are known to be an ideal material that is used for furniture; it is indeed due to its durability and look. It is a sought after by most people who wanted to have a comfy look in their sofa. Likewise, these wood chairs are also the common used in offices for a comfortable sitting place to work and relax.

However, one disadvantage of this wood furniture is that it is expensive, but it is not necessary to buy another brand new set in order to achieve a comfy place. If you have some old wood chair back in your home you can just repair it, and repaint it to give it a new look. With this, you can save money plus it is a great opportunity to improve your skills.

It is rather easy to have those old wood chairs fixed up than to spend a great deal of money. Though, it needs time to fix the chair, it is still worth the effort. And for fixing the chair, it is better to find an ideal place for it, make it sure that the place has enough light so that the scratches can be easily found for fixing.

You can use sandpapers for those revealing scratches on some parts of the chairs. Use some polishing after cleaning up the surface and fill those holes with some special wood putty. Remember that it should look pleasant and new again, so you do not have to overdo the work, just simple touch will do. And after it, you can add some polishing for some new look. Repairing your old chair is not a hard task, indeed it is a great way to save some fortune plus it can be a good hobby. Moreover, this is a way to preserve too much usage of woods that might be harmful to the environment.

Ergonomic Furniture For Office Isn't Solely For Big Business

Barely weeks after moving into a new office, employees at a title search firm are complaining about backaches, headaches, tired eyes and blurry vision. It sounds like their employer may need to conduct a design and functional analysis to get ergonomic furniture for office.

"Ergonomics" is a word that's heard about the workplace a lot these days. It refers to methods that analyze how people interact with the equipment in their office in ways that affect their job performance. This analysis measures the relationships among the worker, the equipment and the work environment, and looks for ways to improve them.

Ergonomics has become increasingly important as people do more work by computer. In particular, workplaces that rely heavily on computers as essential tools have discovered that using a computer places a particular set of stresses on people. Not only are workers more vulnerable to Repetitive Stress Injury because of increased typing, employees have developed headaches and backaches because of how they sit when working on computers. In addition, a new malady, Computer Vision Syndrome and Digital Eye Fatigue, has been identified. This is a condition in which people suffer blurry vision and headaches because their eyeglasses don't properly compensate for the distance between their eyes and the computer screen.

These are only a few examples of the kinds of things that are analyzed in the design of ergonomic furniture for office. Designers have determined that the key element of ergonomic furniture for office is a person's task chair, especially if that person works at a desk or on a computer.

Choosing an ergonomic office chair for an employee involves finding a chair that fits the worker's body size, has multiple adjustments to position the chair according to the work task, and sits on five wheels to avoid the chair tipping over. Precise measurements should be taken to assure a proper fit, both to the worker and to his or her office space.

Whereas in the past desks were often selected before chairs, using ergonomic furniture for office requires selecting the desk after the chair is chosen. The desk must sit at a height where the worker's elbows will be at a 90-degree angle when his or her hands are on the computer keyboard. A desk may need to be raised on sturdy blocks for an extremely tall worker, or it may need to be cut down or replace for a petite worker.

Computer monitors should be of a size that a worker doesn't have to twist his or her head in order to see all the characters on the screen. Workers should be able to reach telephones, recorders and other desktop equipment without having to lean to use them. The telephone in particular should be within arm's reach, or as close to the keyboard as possible. Also the worker should have a telephone headset so that he or she need not cradle the phone between ear and shoulder in order to use the keyboard while talking.

Ergonomic keyboards and computer "mice" should provide maximum support for wrist and arm. This support will minimize tension when typing and reduce the likelihood of repetitive stress injuries.

Most often, those homes found in the different FSBO listings will not always appear the exact way you would want it to be. There might be a few small things that might need improvement like the arrangement of the interiors, the set up of the kitchen appliances as well as the lighting of the room. These are just a few of the things that most clients encounter when purchasing a FSBO home.

When it comes to the arrangement of the interiors, it does not need much effort. A few twist and turn and a few changes of the angle you will now have the set up that you are looking for. This goes the same with the set up of your kitchen appliances. In the contrary, when dealing with the lighting system, it can be a little bit more off the hook and harder to manage. Though you may want to fill the entire house with light bulbs, it wouldn't be possible and the main thing is that it will not look good as well. So here are a few tips for to brighten up your home.

• If you don't know how to pain that well, then hiring a painter will certainly make the job easier. But if you think you're ready to get down and dirty, then this job would not be a problem for you.
• First thing you must do is to make sure that you have covered the entire floor with used newspapers and tape them securely on the wall and most especially on the angle where the floor meets the wall.
• Follow through with covering the widows, cabinets and doors and still make sure that it remains secured.
• Remove all switch plate and outlet covers. Be sure to take out everything, you wouldn't want to stain these items with paint.
• Fill in the holes as well as cracks that might be found on your wall. Cracks and holes can be a great cause for paint to chip off and eventually ruin the entire paint job. So be sure to keenly check on the entire surface of the wall.
• When you have ascertained that all that needs to be filled is done, then you can now start off by painting a primary coating on the wall. The main purpose of a primer is to make an even and uniform surface for the main paint.
• When the primer has dried up, you can now start on painting the walls with the ideal color that you would want. Be sure to evenly coat the walls and go through every small detail. When done, allow the paint to dry up first before proceeding to the next task.
• Reapply the same color over the first coating. Therefore you will have two coatings of your chosen paint color.
• Allow the entire wall paint to dry first. When dry, slowly peel of the tape that secures all the coverings that you have attached previously and be sure not to the unpainted surface
• Return all the plates that you have removed on the exact location and be sure to tighten the screw.
• Do a run through on the entire paint job that you have done and be sure to check on it well. This is the most ideal time for you to redo something or might be improve on something.

Orthopedic Office Chairs

Orthopedic office chairs are excellent back support chairs, which are available in memory foam as well as leather and many fabric grades and colors. A unique range of orthopedic office chairs are designed for those with chronic back pain. Orthopedic office chairs ensure proper posture, increasing critical blood flow to the brain and extremities and expanding respiratory capacity. These also offer total-spinal alignment by virtue of their skilful, scientific design.

Orthopedic chairs have a depression at the rear of the seat cushion, which helps to decrease the pressure at the base of the spine allowing you to sit more comfortably for longer periods of time. The inflatable cushion contained within the back of the chair offers support for the lumbar while maintaining the natural S-curve of the spine. Other features include pneumatic seat height adjustment for stress free posture.

Orthopedic office chairs have tilt locks, posture lock controls, back height adjustment and multi-task control. These ergonomic chairs are now manufactured in small and petite sizes to accommodate smaller workers. Such chairs have a smaller seat with minimal contouring and with all necessary ergonomic controls for a healthy seating posture. Similarly, for tall and hefty individuals there are special orthopedic ergonomic chairs designed to ease stress. These have larger seats, wider backs and sturdy steel frames. Adjustable seat height and depth mechanisms assure maximum comfort for tall individuals. Executive leather orthopedic office chairs are available for managers and executives. You can also choose to buy intensive use chairs, which are hardy and apt for those workers who spend a considerable time in the office. Lightweight orthopedic chairs are portable and can be moved anywhere you wish.
